Some experimentation with Minecraft mods

September 8th, 2021

I decided to try experimenting a bit with Minecraft mods and was pleasantly surprised at the utility they added to the game. I can now quickly sort my inventory and chests with Mouse Wheelie, find where I put my equipment or stored a certain kind of material with Chest Tracker, see what's in my shulker boxes without placing them with ShulkerBoxTooltip, find out who owns a horse or cat or dog with Pet Owner, and have various other small fixes to make my experience a little smoother.

The trip home from the U.P.

September 6th, 2021

I packed up this morning and headed back on my way home. It was a little rainy. I made the trip in about 4-5 hours. I rather regret not stopping anywhere on my way back -- I missed several opportunities to get pasties/fudge/whatnot , but what's done is done.

I wasn't feeling great when I got home -- rather alone and down. And tired. I tried to take a nap, but failed -- I've never been able to fall asleep when trying to fall asleep -- but eventually my day was over.

My trek to the Tahquamenon Lower Falls

Trip to the Lower Falls

The rain let up today and I went to the Tahquamenon Lower Falls. I brought an umbrella just in case, but it was pretty sunny for most of the time.

I took several videos of the falls and edited them together:

Here's some more photos.

Rain, rain, go away...

September 4th, 2021

In saving my planning for the last minute, I failed to check one crucial thing: the weather where I was headed. As it turns out, the weather made itself all too clear to me within hours of going to sleep. Rain pounded upon the top of my tent, waking me up at 3 AM. The little rivers of water sloshed about the rocks as I watched out the little flap in the door.

The rain had not ceased by morning. I decided to head into town and get breakfast, stopping at a little diner in Paradise, MI.

Breakfast was two eggs, sunny-side up, with wheat toast. I can't say it was one of the better breakfasts I've had at a small-town diner. But it was okay, at least. I headed back to camp after waiting around a bit for my ebooks to download, and then proceeded to sit around in my tent for a few hours while it continued to rain.

Eventually I got tired of sitting around trying to read my book in the rain, so I drove a couple miles to the upper falls and stopped in a pub for dinner.

Giant stainless-steel tanks lined the wall behind the bar:

I'm not very experienced with ordering drinks, but I really wanted to try the blueberry vodka, which I had mixed with a little lemonade. What a fun taste! I was thinking of taking some home with me, but it seems like they aren't doing that these days due to some interruptions in the supply chain for wheat/barley. Too bad... Could've made for a great Christmas gift.

There was a bit of a wait to get seated — not surprising, of course, as here in America it was Memorial Day weekend.

I ordered Lake Superior whitefish, lightly breaded, with a side of tomato-basil soup and a baked potato (with sour cream).

After dinner I went outside to sit by the fire for a little while to let the alcohol wear off before I headed back to camp.

I pulled up a rocking chair and talked with a fellow that sat by me about various things. He was heading back to New York and passing through Canada on the way there. Sounds like he's trying to find his way in life.

The rain continued throughout the night.

On my way to go camping!

September 3rd, 2021

I finally decided on where I wanted to go camping -- Tahquamenon Falls State Park. I managed to get the last camp spot for a few days for about $90 and made my way up there starting from the mid-afternoon.

Here's a video from when I went across the Mackinac Bridge:

I got there pretty late, so I had to set up my tent in the dark. There was no cell service there at all.
